Anti-Bullying Week 2025: Respect Week

This year we choose to look at the following statement from the new PSHE curriculum:

Schools should be sensitive to pupils’ circumstances, recognising that families of many forms provide a nurturing environment for children, and can include single parent families, same-sex parents, families headed by grandparents, young carers, kinship carers, adoptive parents and foster parents/carers. Teaching should illustrate a wide range of family structures in a positive way, and care should be taken to ensure that children are not stigmatised based on their home circumstances

To support our learning the children focussed on a book called Some Brothers and Some Sister by Hannah Welch.  This is a simple picture book which clearly demonstrates how some families are blended in a clear concise and easy manner to understand.  The author of the book visited school on Friday 15th November and read the story to Reception and KS1.  The children had the opportunity to share some of their completed work with Hannah.  This is Hannah's first book which she has also illustrated.  Hannah wrote the book to explain her blended family to her son, who was finding it difficult to understand where his brothers and sisters all fitted together.

The children understood that all families are different and that all their families are perfect for them.

As parents and carers we all want our children to be happy and safe, and it is natural to worry about bullying - particularly if we have experienced bullying ourselves or think our child may be more vulnerable to bullying.

As a parent or carer, you are a vital piece of the puzzle in tackling bullying.  You have a unique role to play in guiding and supporting your child through their school years and there are many positive steps you can take to help keep your child safe from bullying and harm.  One of the steps is knowing when to ask for support.
