Curriculum

Our curriculum overview for the year
Our topic for this half term is Rainforests.
The 'big question' we are investigating is, 'Should the indigenous people of South America be left alone?'

CHESS

Four members of Year 5 travelled to Ireland Wood Primary School this week to take part in a 10 team chess competition. They competed brilliantly, maintaining great sportsmanship in both victory & defeat, finishing in fourth place overall.

WELL DONE ALL!

RE

As part of our study of Islam and to help the children make links between it and Christianity, Year 5 visited Leeds Grand Mosque. During the visit, children listened to a leader sing a traditional call to prayer. They learnt that Muslims pray 5 times a day, pointing towards Mecca.

Later, the children moved to another part of the mosque where they learnt about the six beliefs of Islam
Our visit coincided with the third prayer time of the day, so the children were able to observe a number of people praying to Allah.
In another part of the mosque, children learnt about the 5 pillars of Islam
Finally, the children had the opportunity to consider where Muslims lived around the world, and what clothing they would wear.

PSHE

In PSHE, we have started to consider emotions - different emotions, how they make us feel in our body and how we can regulate our emotions. During our initial activity, children worked in groups to recall synonyms for common emotions.

Planetarium

Year 5 were lucky enough to visit the Planetarium today! The children learnt about the planets and our Solar system in more detail and were able to take an interactive journey to other planets within our Solar system.

DT

In DT this half term, we have been learning about CAMS and designing and making our own moving toy. Our brief was to design a product that would help the WWF raise awareness of the endangered species of animals in the UK.

Advent Experience

Today, Year 5 had some visitors who came into class and carried out some work with us about the Christmas Story and Advent. The children then carried out a variety of activities to reflect on what they had learnt in the session. Some children chose to write a story or a playscript; others created a drama or a picture.

Jorvik

As part of our topic on the Vikings we visited the Jorvik museum in York. Here we learnt what Viking life in Britain was like, we were able to carry out an archaeological dig and handle real bones and Viking poo!

Maths

In maths this week, we have been ordering and comparing numbers up to 1,000,000. Today we played a game with our partner where we had to round 6 and 7 digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000.

RE

In RE this half term, Year 5 have been considering the importance of the church to Christians and it's features. We discussed what we already knew about churches and drew what we thought a church looks like.

We have been considering 'Jesus the Saviour' and why Christians believe Jesus is a saviour. We discussed what saviour meant and considered the qualities a saviour would need.
